Master Bedroom Reveal

I had so much fun doing the final reveal the girls room, I thought I'd give you all a quick look at our (mostly) finished master bedroom. There's nothing like a good room reveal right? I say 'mostly' finished because while I don't have any big projects on the docket, there are a few things I would change in a heartbeat if I had a bag o' money and a couple weeks of free time (the floors, doors and closet doors for example) but right now this is feeling pretty good.

When I find a look I love, I hold on to it so it should come as no surprise that the bed that my husband made and the quilt that I made are still part of our master decor.  At some point I imagine we'll use another quilt and put this someplace where it will get less wear and tear just to preserve it, but I can't imagine ever getting a new bed. For all the hard work we did I'm glad that we are both still in love with our bed and bedding.  (Faux fur blanket from Restoration Hardware.) The sconces are School house electric--I love their lighting.  The side tables are Target.  I actually got really lucky with those because I only bought one at first.  When we moved and I realized I wish we had matching side tables, but it had already been months and they were long gone.  Then one day while shopping at Target I suddenly spotted another table that must have been a return and I snatched it right up!  The painting above the bed is mine (other prints here).

Lots of people have asked me about the paint color--it's Starless Night by Behr and I still really like it.  It's an inky, deep blue that in certain light looks almost black, which I love. Remember when we were deciding which kind of paint to use and we came across a consumer reports that rated Behr above all other paint brands?  Well overall I've been pleased with it, but I do have some little chips especially on corners, from time to time.  I keep a small jar of our wall paint in my studio for quick touch ups, so it's not a big deal, but I'm wondering if that's a common problem with any paint.

Undoubtedly one of my favorite things in our room is this large vintage mirror.  I actually got this as a lot of 8 mirrors from an estate sale for around $120.  Steal!  They all have that vintage, mottled glass look and are really beautiful. Another one hangs above the dresser (below).  Also, I love having our beloved white couch in our bedroom.  We bought this our first time around in Cincinnati at an antique mall and I still love it, although I've always thought we were a little crazy for buying a white couch with young children. Having in our room feels like a great solution.  And still digging the velvet cross pillow cover.

The room finally felt done when I bought the plan at Ikea a couple weeks ago.  That corner needed something, but I didn't want more shelves/pictures/stuff around.  I have purposely wanted to keep this room a little more minimal.

Anyway, that's it! I love that our house is starting to take shape and feels more like a home. I'm a big believer in surrounding yourself with beauty and making your home a place you enjoy being in. Beauty elevates, plain and simple.

Question:  What are your feelings about ceiling fans in rooms?  We haven't really used this one yet and so I'm ready to ditch it for a nice, modern fixture but on the other hand I know some people really love having the option of fans in their room.  We've had them in the past and at some point have used them.  If I do keep a fan in this room, I'd want to change it out for a more modern fixture....but still the dilemma.  To fan or not to fan.  Thoughts?

  1. This looks great. I am envious of the deal you found on those mirrors! I'm hoping for a good mirror in our entry, but of course prices at retailers are lame. Time to shop yard sales, I guess.

I've always been in the ceiling-fans-are-hideous camp, but since we've never owned a house with AC (CURSE YOU OLD HOUSES), my ceiling fans have been necessary.

    1. Liv--never owned a house with AC? I'm amazed that you've pulled that off...I guess you don't live in south Texas? :) And in this home I don't think we've turned our fan on once in our MB. It seems to be one of the rooms that gets the coolest...so really, I might ditch it.

  2. Ace paint and primers (used Clark & Kensington first, then Optimus last year) are OUTSTANDING. Despite having to scrub walls, the only reason I repainted was I was tired of the colors. And my bedroom went from a very deep purple with no wearing or flaws after 39 months to a very very dark navy made by mixing two gallons Midnight Sonata to 1.5 gallons Tomcat. 6 months in, the walls remain flawless in the new darker color. Prior to Ace, I had used Behr. The wear and chipping was awful. I used sealing primers over it to keep the Ace paint nice. The paint under the Behr wasn't wearing or chipping, and the walls were properly cleaned and prepped.

Old house and while I have AC, it's wildly inefficient, I work seconds (so hot part of the day), the house has amazing cross ventilation and high ceilings with transom windows above interior doors and ceiling fans. Using AC in mid July, I can barely get the house to 75° and get an electric bill of $200+. Or I use a bunch of fans set appropriately and worship the ceiling fans - house may get to 76° a few days but it's pretty easy to get rooms to feel like 68-70° at night and I see an electric bill of $50. I'm taking ugly ceiling fans for that savings any day of the week.

  4. I really like this! I love seeing how when people decorate, it really brings out their own personal style. My old room used to be close to that color and I always felt cozy in there. As far as ceilings fans go, I think of them like mini-vans. They are just too darn practical. We just put on in our room, and also our great room. We've hardly had to use our air this summer- part because of the weather, but also because of the fans (we have a ranch with helps too, not being upstairs). Anyway- we found ours at lows.com which had a more modern/fancier look to match our room a little better. Our great room fan is pretty modern and we found on Amazon at Dan's Fans. We needed a really big one for that room because of our high ceilings. I sometimes don't love it dangling down, but I think overall, I'm pleased we have it.

    1. Ha! Ceiling fans= mini vans. I like it. Yes in our old house we used it quite a lot, but as I mentioned above our room is actually quite cool at night so I really think we might be able to ditch it...OR maybe upgrade to a more modern one. Eventually.

  5. Make sure you do your basic homework before you start buying or you may find that your special bedroom is not such a delight. Get it right and you'll love it.
