Exploring San Antonio: The Missions

Yes, more exploring San Antonio.  I know, we're on fi-ya!  A couple weeks ago we ended up going to the Mission San Jose.  The biggest in North America!  It was beautiful.  And I would say fascinating but the tour ended up being a snooze-fest and after trying to corral 2 wild chillin's for an hour we gave up and broke away from the pack.   Still the grounds were lovely and the pictures are nice, no?

Even though we were inside a very echo-y church and I was trying to keep my kidlets quiet, I secretly love when they're being mischievous little rascals.  Look at those two cuties breakin' the law.

I hope these little posts on our San Antonio explorations are somewhat enjoyable.  My family didn't do that much local exploring growing up, and to this day people will ask me if I ever did this or that around Denver and I'm surprised how often the answer is no.  I'm a big fan of getting out and exploring your city.  Especially since I've lived in a lot of different places in the US (Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, Hawaii, New York City, Ohio and now Texas).   I have to say exploring your surroundings is one of the best ways I have found to feel connected to wherever you're currently calling home.  It's also helped me feel at ease that when we're finally free to settle down on our own in 2 years, that no matter where we end up, we'll be able to find a way to love it.  It's worked wonders for our feelings about San Antonio!

What about you?  Are you a fan of getting out and exploring your surroundings?  Even if you've lived somewhere a really long time?  Or are you a creature of habit and stick with what you know?

Design mom has been running a Love the Place You Live series asking readers to share their local might even find your city listed on there.  Check it out here, here, and here.

I think the angel in your last photo looks like Lamp!

  2. I really love that you are getting out and exploring your area. Both my husband and I came from families that explored the area where we grew up (him-Cali/AZ and me-MA). He was in the military so we explored the ares where we were stationed. Wow! I certainly grew to love every place we lived. This includes Yuma, AZ. It was 122 degrees the day we rolled into that town and I swore, I would hate it forever. I grew to love it so much, I left there (kicking, screaming and) crying. Every place has beauty, some times we just need to look for it. BTW, I just love your kiddos!

  3. so cute! I love their heads under the keep out sign! Oooo lil' girls can be so naughty:) Totally feeling guilty of not exploring my town! You've motivated me to get out and do it! thanks!

  4. I grew up in the UK and I've also lived on the little island of Mallorca and now live in New York. My husband grew up here and I always wonder if he went anywhere as a child! He is exploring his hometown with me after all these years! We have a lot of visitors and it's fun to see your own area through the eyes of others and it inspires me to find more off the beaten track little gems. In the picture of your little ones breaking the rules you can really see the love between the sisters, adorable.

We love the Missions too! We have never taken the formal tour--we just wander and read. My husband is a history buff, so he fills in the gaps of my knowledge. It's a great outing when you just want to walk around and it's free! Whee!

BTW, I loved!!!! your Nebraska paintings. It makes me kind of homesick!

    Laura (from Nebraska and Costco)

  6. Kiki--122 degrees? I might have died. But glad you came to love it!

Erin--I know right? Love the sister power.

Louise--I can see the love. And it's true, they ADORE each other.

Laura--yes, I think we'll stick to wandering around next time too!

    Anon--I didn't notice that, but I think you're right!

  7. I am totally loving your San Antonio finds! And yes, I've been exploring our new town as well, and have it all written up as beautiful blog posts in my mind. Maybe I'll get those up soon and you can have extra reason to be excited for June.

  8. I agree! Getting out and exploring where you live can be soooo fun! I love your pictures...especially of your little ones breaking the law. So funny.
