A Slightly Healthier Cookie



I'm not one of those people who's ever going to cut sugar completely out of my diet {at least not until my adult onset diabetes kicks in}.  I eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and whole grains, but I still love me some dessert.  And because I love my dessert I try to eat very healthy in my regular meals.  Oatmeal with honey for breakfast, whole wheat bread and tortillas, fresh fruits and vegetables...followed by ice cream covered in magic shell with Keebler fudge stripe cookies on the side.  B doesn't get this.  He doesn't understand why I insist on whole wheat tortillas, but down a bag of Dove chocolates in 2 days.  I have tried to explain that because I'm always going to eat sweets I try to make the rest of my diet very nutritious.  I'm not one of those people who thinks If I run 3 miles and then eat a cookie, it will totally void out all the calories I just burned.  No, no I think,  I'm going to eat the cookie either way, so the run is just a bonus.  

Am I rambling?  A bit.  But here's what I want to share.  I love chocolate chip cookies and I just made a batch of cookies that are still chocolately and yummy, but slightly more healthy.  I'm not talking granola sunflower cranberry flax seed crunch cookies, no I still want real cookies...but if I can cut out a little fat and they still taste good, why not?  So here it is...it's the regular Toll House Chocolate Chip recipe, but instead of 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour I used 1 cup of whole wheat flour and 1 1/4 cups regular all purpose flour.  And instead of 2 sticks of butter, I used 1 stick of butter and a little less than 1/2 cup unsweetened apple sauce.  {You may have to add a little more flour if the dough looks a little runny like mine did}.  Anyway, they're a little more cake-y, but still delicious and on the plus side they don't go all flat on you.  Why am I sharing such powerful eat-like-a-cow-but-look-like-Posh-Spice knowledge with you?  No reason.  I'm good like that.  I just like to look out for my sistah's.  Holla!

  1. I'm going to have to try this. I totally get where you are coming from. I eat healthy but when it comes to sweets...i just don't care.

  3. how crazy that this very morning I substituted whole wheat flour for one of the cups in my pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. It was the first time I have EVER done that. strange.

    I haven't been here for awhile, but I wanted to say hi. I can't believe how much that baby girl has grown since the last time I saw her picture. She's beautiful!

  6. My hubby and I still use a full stick of butter, (sugar and butter is one of our favorite combos) but instead of white flour we use whole wheat and use baking powder to be sure they fluff up enough.

    And I agree with your philosophy. Why deny the fact that i am always going to eat that bowl of ice cream or giant piece of chocolate. Life isn't worth living without it!
