The Internet: Friend or Foe?

I have an love/hate relationship with my friend Mr. Net, first name Inter. Oh the internet! Sometimes I waste so much time reading blogs of people I sorta know, haven't talked to in years, but heard they were married, saw them 3 years ago, used to be friends with their friends and on and on. Then there are the blogs of people I don't even know at all but think of as friends. Then there are the social net-working sites...Friendster, MySpace, LDS linkup, and now Facebook. Truly some of the best time-suckers known to man. The internet is the black hole where my times disappears never to be heard from again. The internet also incurs my wrath for the rampant and widespread use of porn*ogr*aphy. (For those of you not in the know, I misspell p#rn on purpose so that sickos searching that word will not end up on my blog). (Also for those of you not in the know, yes I absolutely believe p$orn is of the devil and the source of much evil in the world). I'm no scientist, but it seems to me that with the rise of the internet there has also been a noticeable rise of sexual crime. The negative impact is incalculable. Then there is cyber-bullying, kids beating up kids and posting the videos on line, and so forth. It's hard for me to believe the internet is worth having around at all...

Yes, there's the good. Finding directs and locations with ease, email, blogs of dear friends and family, keeping in touch, instant communication, on-line shopping, weather reports, news from around the world...it goes on and on. While those things are nice, they're not good. Not noble.

Then...

it happens... a family suffers a tragic accident and people all over the world sound the alarms and like torches being lit on mountain tops to signal impending danger, blogs start buzzing with the call to serve and soon help is on the way. Noble and good...and all possible because of the internet.

*Please check back on Thursday as this little Miggy is going to participate in some fundraising for NieNie and her family.

  1. Constant inner battle in my head. I got so used to being on the Internet all stinking day long at work, that now that I'm not working, I still do it. Major time waster. I don't want my kids growing up and saying, mommy's on the computer all day long. That would make me one LAME mom. Thus, I need to make a change soon. All about balance.

  2. I think just like most material things, it's the way we use it. Most things can be used for good or ill. It's personal accountability.
