Design With Fabric

One thing I love about moving is the chance to re-do your space. Sometimes there are things I wish I had done differently style or design wise, but I was just too unmotivated to make any changes. But moving is like a fresh start in so many ways that it's the perfect time to make changes--big or small.

One thing that I've wanted to do for a while is add a little color to our entertainment center. At first I thought about painting the inside a different color...but that's much more work than I really wanted to do. So I had the idea of lining the back with some fabric. I did it and I think it looks great. Here are some pics.

It's a small change, but I think it makes a big difference. It was even easier than I imagined. There was no sewing involved. Here's the quick tutorial....Keep in mind that the middle shelves pull out, so I was able to slide the fabric behind those shelves in one long piece and push the shelves back to keep the fabric in place. I measured the shelves in height and width and cut out a piece of fabric that length plus 1 inch on each side to allow for a seam. Then, I didn't actually sew a seam (although you could) but I used the iron and ironed a 1/2 inch seam all the way around. Once ironed in place, I used double-sided tape to adhere the fabric to the back and voila! Done and done. Then when I'm finished with this particular look I can switch out different fabric and I still have this fabric in perfectly good condition to use for another project.

  1. Brilliant and very economical move! Good job, looks beautiful!

  2. so cute and i have that same fabric!!! wow, it looks fantastic

  3. great idea, I might have to copy you.

  4. I love it-- that fabric goes perfectly with the color of the entertainment center.

  5. v. cool. i have an awesome source for incredible free designer fabric monthly out here (like hundreds of $$/yard). i'm going to try it. i've also seen DIYourself headboards with fabric for beds, have you seen that anywhere? nice craftiness chica.
