The Wonder Years

If you know me than you probably know that my all time favorite TV show is The Wonder Years. (And if you don't know that, well than you don't know me). I even remember watching the very first episode--I was in 5th grade. I also remember watching the final episode (so what if I cried?) my Sophomore year of high school and writing The Wonder Years logo (above) in everyone's year book as sort of a tribute. (Can you say obsessive?)

Recently I was lamenting the fact that The Wonder Years never gets picked up in syndication. Then like 2 days later I found a new channel that I didn't know we had previously (since we only get like 10 channels) and wouldn't you know it . . . they play 2 episodes of The Wonder Years every evening! I was a little bummed that this block started at 10, since I try to get to bed pretty early these days . . . but somehow it now starts at 9. I know! It's like The Wonder Years gods are specifically answering my Wonder Years prayers.

Why did I love it so much? I don't know exactly. I'm sure it helped that I was the same age as the characters at the time and so I sorta grew up with them. And maybe I was nursing a little crush on Kevin Arnold and fancied myself a modern day Winnie Cooper (which I totally wasn't). I think I wanted to be Winnie Cooper . . . I just realized she was my first girl crush. (And Winnie is short for Gwendolyn. Coincidence?) I also think it had something to do with the fact that even back then I wish I had lived in the 40's, 50's or 60's. I don't know what it is about that time period, but it always made life seem a little more simple--even though it wasn't. I know those are radically different decades, but I think I've always felt like I was in a time warp. Like I should have been born anytime but now. But regardless of the shows setting (late 60's, early 70's) it was relate-able. Kevin and Winnie went through the same things I went through. . . and I'm sure what kids are going through today, more or less. I know there's no "Gunman Rampages through the School" episode or anything, but I think the show hits on the heart of adolescence.

Anyway, I found a little clip from youtube, please enjoy (you might want to grab a tissue).

p.s. After watching that clip I had to go download Bob Seger's "We've got Tonight."

  2. I was obsessed with The Wonder Years. It helped that Kevin, Winnie, and Paul were the same age as me. When they were in 7th grade, so I was I, etc.

My dad doesn't laugh much at TV, but even now, I think he'd tell you that the character of Wayne was one of his favorites. I have rarely seen him laugh so hard as when Wayne was really giving it to Kevin.

  4. Azucar--I remember someone in Seattle telling me how "Wayne from the Wonder Years" was all about Marchex and had a bunch of their stock . . . I can't remember who knew him. Someone in distribution. Crazy huh?

Tawni--I don't remember this specific episode, but it's called "The accident" and apparantly Winnie was in a car accident and she and Kevin were broken up and she had been dating some other guy too (Kirk McCray?) but they broke up too . . . which is why I think Kev was all anxious to see her. I want to see the whole episode. And yeah I think it's on DVD.

  5. Ah yes, The Wonder Years will forever remind me of Gueck. TWYs is on every night in Denver on some random station-or so it says on my TV guide, but it is rarely actually on. It's just a tease, very sad.

  6. Loved the Wonder Years. Also had a small thing with Saved by the Bell. Does that cancel out all coolness?

Saved by the Bell is so incredibly cheesy... my bros know every piece of trivia from every episode.
